Spine privacy policy

Last updated: 1 November 2026

Spine has no accounts of ours, no servers of ours, no advertising and no analytics. Your reading history stays on your devices and in your own iCloud.

What Spine keeps

These sync between your iPhone, iPad and Mac through your private iCloud database. We never receive them.

Kept on each device only, and never synced:

Readest

If you sign in with your Readest account, your email and password go once to Readest's sign-in service. Spine keeps only the resulting sign-in token, in your device's Keychain, and never stores your password. With that token, Spine reads your books, reading positions, reading time and covers from Readest. It never writes to or changes your Readest library. What Readest does with your data is covered by Readest's own policy.

Finding books and covers

When you search for a book, scan a barcode or type an ISBN, what you entered is sent to open library catalogues: Open Library, Inventaire and the BnF catalogue. For a book with no cover, Spine may send its title, author or ISBN to Open Library to find one. If you import a Book Tracker export, Spine downloads the cover links saved in it. No other information about you goes with these requests.

What Spine never does

Deleting your data

Removing a book hides it in Spine and in your stats; your copy in Readest stays as it is. Sign Out in Settings deletes the Readest token and Spine's copy of your Readest library and reading time from that device; what you added yourself stays. Deleting Spine removes its data from that device. To remove the synced copy too, delete Spine's data from iCloud in the Settings app, under your name, iCloud, then Manage Storage.
